The Fussy Stuff

Title: Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds

Author: Brandon Sanderson

Narrator: Oliver Wyman

Format: Audiobook

Genre: Fiction, Fantasy, Science Fiction

Quick Take: An absolute standout: wildly original, endlessly twisty, and anchored by one of the most intriguing characters I’ve come across in a long time.

My Take

I was recommending this one before I had even finished it. That probably tells you everything you need to know.

This is easily the top of my list for the year so far, and I do not say that lightly. I really REALLY enjoyed reading this book. There are so many good things about it – which we will talk about – but fundamentally it was a fun and compelling read, it made me feel good and I wanted to keep going. That is the heart of it.

One major thing that grabbed me and refused to let go was Stephen himself. He is such a fascinating, layered character. The kind of character you find yourself still thinking about hours after you have put the book down. His dynamic with the… let’s call them companions… he surrounds himself with is unlike anything I have read before, and I found myself constantly wanting more of it. These teases of references to other characters and other adventures they had gone on in the past made me crave more and more.

The story is also genuinely unpredictable in the best way. I never had a reasonable guess about what was coming next, and I loved that. For a genre that can sometimes feel like it is following a very standard formula, this one kept me completely off balance in the most satisfying way.

I also really appreciated the three-novellas-in-one format. For a story this lore-heavy and character-driven, it felt like exactly the right fit. Each section builds on the last without overstaying its welcome, and the structure kept the momentum going in a way that a single sprawling novel might not have.

SPOILERS (skip if you want to go in fresh)

That ending. I was not prepared. I shed a couple of tears, and I am not even remotely embarrassed about it. And yet, I genuinely cannot imagine any other ending that would have felt right. It is the kind of conclusion that hurts precisely because it is so real.

End of spoilers.

This was the read I needed. The one that reminds you why you read in the first place, and why you will never stop picking up books, even when a few in a row have let you down.

Unfussed Verdict

If you want something clever, unpredictable, and genuinely unlike anything else on your shelf, pick this one up. Just clear your schedule first.

Unfussed Homework (Optional, Obviously)

Think about the last character you were completely obsessed with. What was it about them that made you want to keep reading? Was it the mystery of who they were, or was it that you just genuinely liked spending time with them?
