My New Years Reading Resolutions

It is that time of year again. (Or at least it was a couple weeks ago. Time isn’t real. Go with me here.)

It is time to set your reading intentions for 2026. Are you going to read more books? Less books? Different kinds of books?

This year, I think my goal is going to be to try to read more non-fiction.

Non-fiction is something I almost never pick up as my very first choice, but when I find the right book, I really really enjoy myself.

One such book that immediately comes to mind is I’m Glad my Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy. I don’t even know how I ended up on this book. Probably it was the only audiobook available that I was interested in when I was ready to go out for a walk. I’m glad it worked out though, because I quite enjoyed myself. I read this too long ago to give you a true review (I’m forgetful!), but I do remember being impressed with how it somehow was able to balance awful abuse with lightheartedness and hope.

And again, this was a book that I likely never would have picked up organically.

So I think that this year I’m going to try purposefully picking up more nonfiction, probably starting with more biographies or autobiographies. I know Rachel Bloom has a book out that I haven’t read yet. I am a big fan of hers, seems like a good place to start. [As an aside, if you haven’t watched Rachel Bloom’s Death, Let Me Do My Special, stop what you are doing and immediately go and watch it now. I’ll wait.]

Or maybe I will fail this goal dramatically and spend my entire year surrounded by shadow demons, enemies to lovers, and women murdering their husbands (but for a really good reason!). Either result sounds great to me.
